Pass through the "Gates of Paradise" into a valley of pony trails, waterfalls and village life, one of the most loved corners of rural Lesotho.
The road to Malealea crests a pass marked by a famous plaque: "Wayfarer, pause and look upon a gateway of paradise." Below lies a wide valley ringed by mountains, dotted with villages and crossed by bridle paths.
Malealea is best known for pony trekking on sure-footed Basotho ponies, from an hour's ride to multi-day treks with village stays. Walkers head for the Botsoela waterfall, river gorges and rock shelters with San paintings.
The community-linked Malealea Lodge is the hub of the valley, and evenings often bring local choirs and musicians. It's a place to slow down and stay a night or two.

No. Basotho ponies are calm and sure-footed, and local guides lead every ride. Longer treks suit people who are comfortable in the saddle.
It's possible, but we recommend at least one night to enjoy a trek and the evening atmosphere. We'll build it into your itinerary.
