A river that drops 192 metres in a single plunge into a sheer basalt gorge. Semonkong, the "Place of Smoke", is named for the spray that hangs above it.
Maletsunyane Falls is one of the tallest single-drop waterfalls in Southern Africa. The Maletsunyane River slides off a lip of rock near the village of Semonkong and falls 192 metres into a horseshoe gorge, throwing up the mist that gives Semonkong ("Place of Smoke") its name.
The viewpoint sits right on the gorge edge, a short walk from the village. Our guests are welcomed with a traditional Basotho blanket, and there is time for lunch or coffee at Semonkong Lodge before the drive home.
The journey is part of the experience: the road from Maseru winds past Roma and over high mountain passes, through villages where horses are still the main way to get around.
Stand at the rim and watch the river vanish into the gorge. Morning light is usually best for photos.
A Basotho blanket is placed on your shoulders at the viewpoint, a warm local tradition and a great photo.
Semonkong is home to a famous 204m commercial abseil down the gorge beside the falls. Book ahead; it's priced separately.
Ride Basotho ponies through the valley with a local guide, from short rides to longer treks into the gorge.
Riverside lunch or coffee at the lodge, a favourite stop for travellers exploring the highlands.
Mountain passes, shepherds and stone villages make the drive from Maseru a highlight in itself.

The falls are at their most powerful during the summer rains (November–March), when the river is full and the valley is green. Autumn and spring bring clearer skies and good walking weather. In a very cold winter the spray can freeze into ice around the gorge, a rare and beautiful sight.
The road is open all year, but we leave early to make the most of the light and keep an eye on the weather in the rainy season.
