The flat-topped mountain where King Moshoeshoe I gathered the Basotho people and built a fortress that was never taken. The single most important heritage site in Lesotho.
In 1824, during the upheaval of the Lifaqane wars, Moshoeshoe I led his followers to this sandstone plateau east of present-day Maseru. With cliffs on every side and springs on the summit, Thaba Bosiu, the "Mountain at Night", became an almost impregnable stronghold.
From here Moshoeshoe welcomed refugees from many clans and forged them into the Basotho nation. The mountain withstood attacks by Mzilikazi's Ndebele in 1831 and by Free State Boer forces in the 1860s.
Today a footpath leads to the summit, past old fortress walls to the royal cemetery where Moshoeshoe I is buried. At the foot of the mountain, the cultural village and heritage centre bring Basotho history and traditional life to life.
Walk the guided path to the top for wide views over the Phuthiatsana valley and the Maloti beyond.

Thaba Bosiu is only about 30 minutes from the city, which makes it the perfect first outing after you arrive. Many guests pair it with our Maseru city tour on the same day, or with the cave dwellings at Kome Caves.
The summit path is uneven and fairly steep in places. Wear good shoes, bring water and a hat, and allow time to rest at the top.
Thaba Bosiu can be visited all year. Mornings are cooler for the climb in summer, while winter days are usually clear and crisp. Major national celebrations sometimes take place here, including commemorations of Moshoeshoe's Day (11 March).
